Mexican Cheese Substitutes

You’ve just downloaded and printed a killer Mexican recipe, but your local market just doesn’t carry that special cheese. Use this list of common substitutions. Most pinpoint the texture and others are close to the taste.

Disclaimer: Cow’s milk just doesn’t taste like goat’s milk, but these are the best substitutions.


QUESO OAXACA


The best substitute: buffalo mozzarella, sprinkled with extra salt.


QUESO FRESCO

(Queso Ranchero)
Best substitute: Paneer with added salt or very mild feta (French or Danish style).


QUESO REQUESÓN

Best substitute: Cream ricotta


QUESO COTIJA

Best substitute: Ricotta Salata or (in a pinch) Parmesan


QUESO ASADERO

Best substitutes: Provolone (young variety)


QUESO CHIHUAHUA

Best substitutes: Cheddar or Monterrey Jack


QUESO PANELA

Best substitutes: Paneer, halloumi or hard ricotta


QUESO MANCHEGO

Best substitutes: fresh Pecorino, Gouda, Havarti or mild cheddar
