Traditional Irish Soda Bread

 

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 tablespoon salt 3/4 cup buttermilk (if you don’t have buttermilk see recipe for buttermilk)

 

Directions

  1. Sift all dry ingredients together Make a well in the center of dry ingredients

  2. Add buttermilk a little at a time mixing until all dry ingredients are wet. You may need a little more buttermilk if your dough is dry, but if your dough is wet, add more flour.

  3. Mix but Do not overwork your dough Once your dough is mixed, lifted out of your bowl and make it round I like using a cast-iron skillet to make my Irish soda bread.

  4. You can also use a baking sheet with parchment or any other baking dish that you have available. Whatever you’re using. Make sure to put down some oil first.

  5. Cut 1/2 to 1 inch deep slices in an X shape across the top of your dough ball Put this into your preheated 400° oven for 20 to 25 minutes you will know it’s done when it is golden brown on top and it has a hollow sound when you thump it.

Note: Fun additions to your dough could be everything bagel seasoning, fresh herbs, citrus, zest, or caraway seeds you can get very creative with Irish soda bread
