Yield: 4-6 servings
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 25 minutes
Special Equipment: large skillet or pot with lid
Ingredients
1 lb ground beef or finely chopped beef
1 ½ cups long grain white rice uncooked
1 small onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 ½ teaspoons ground turmeric
1 teaspoon cumin
½ teaspoon smoked paprika
Salt and black pepper to taste
3 cups beef broth or water
2 tablespoons olive oil or butter
Fresh herbs for garnish parsley, dill, or cilantro
Directions
Sauté Aromatics
In a large skillet or pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add diced onion and cook until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for another 1–2 minutes.
Brown the Beef
Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Season with turmeric, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir to coat the beef in the spices.
Add the Rice
Stir in the uncooked rice and let it toast for 1–2 minutes with the beef mixture.
Simmer
Pour in the beef broth or water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 18–20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and the liquid is absorbed.
Fluff and Garnish
Turn off the heat, let it sit covered for 5 minutes, then fluff with a fork. Garnish with fresh herbs and serve.
