This Broccoli Goma-ae features oven-roasted broccoli tossed in a rich, nutty sesame miso sauce. Toasted sesame seeds, soy sauce, and miso create bold, savory flavor in this easy Japanese side dish. Perfect for a healthy, flavorful meal

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • 1 tablespoon miso paste

  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce

  • 1 head of broccoli (or about 3 cups florets)

Directions

  1. Toast the sesame seeds:

In a dry pan over medium heat, toast the sesame seeds until fragrant and lightly golden, stirring often. Remove from heat.

  2. Make the sauce:

Using a mortar and pestle, grind the toasted sesame seeds until crushed but still slightly textured. Add the miso paste and sugar to the sesame seeds and continue grinding until well combined. Stir in the soy sauce to create a smooth sauce.

  3. Bake the broccoli:

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Spread the broccoli florets on a baking sheet, drizzle lightly with oil if desired, and roast for about 15–20 minutes, until tender and slightly caramelized at the edges.

  4. Assemble the dish:

Toss the warm roasted broccoli with the sesame miso sauce until evenly coated.

Serve immediately for the best flavor.
