Caramel Buttermilk Sauce

This Caramel Buttermilk Sauce is an incredibly rich and tangy topping that adds a touch of pure indulgence to any dessert.

Yield: Approximately 2½ cups
Prep Time: about 5 minutes
Cook Time: about 8-12 minutes
Special Equipment: 3 quart saucepan

Ingredients

  • 1½ cups buttermilk

  • 1 cup white sugar

  • 1 cup brown sugar

  • ½ cup butter

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a 3-quart saucepan, combine the buttermilk, white sugar, brown sugar, and butter.

  2. Bring to a Boil: Place the saucepan over medium heat. Bring the mixture to a full boil, stirring frequently to ensure the sugars dissolve and prevent scorching.

  3. Remove from Heat: As soon as the sauce reaches a full boil, immediately remove it from the heat.

  4. Add Final Touches: Carefully add the baking soda and vanilla extract. Whisk well. The sauce will foam up significantly at this stage – don't be alarmed, this is normal!

  5. Cool and Settle: Let the sauce sit and cool. The foam will settle down as it cools, leaving you with a luscious caramel sauce.
