Cherry Barbecue Sauce

A sweet, tangy, and slightly smoky barbecue sauce made with real cherries. Perfect for glazing grilled meats, dipping, or slathering on sandwiches.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium onion, chopped

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • 2 cups fresh or frozen dark sweet cherries, pitted and coarsely chopped

  • 1 cup ketchup

  • ⅔ cup packed brown sugar

  • ¼ cup cider vinegar

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 2 teaspoons ground mustard

  • ½ teaspoon pepper

  • ⅛ teaspoon Liquid Smoke optional

 

Directions

  1. In a large saucepan, sauté chopped onion in butter over medium heat until tender. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute longer.

  2. Stir in cherries, ketchup, brown sugar, cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, ground mustard, pepper, and Liquid Smoke if using.

  3. Simmer uncovered over medium-low heat for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cherries are tender and the sauce has thickened.

  4. Let cool slightly, then use immediately or store in a sealed container in the fridge.
