Cook Time: 20 minutes
Special Equipment: Frying pan
Ingredients
3 cups all purpose flour
1 tbsp baking powder
1 tsp fine salt
1 1/4 cups warm water, more if needed
2 tbsp vegetable oil or melted shortening
Oil for frying
1 lb ground beef or turkey
1 small onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 packet taco seasoning or 2 tbsp homemade taco seasoning
1/2 cup water or broth
Salt to taste
Directions
In a large bowl combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir in warm water and oil until a shaggy dough forms. Knead lightly for 1 to 2 minutes until smooth, then cover and let rest 20 to 30 minutes.
Divide dough into 8 pieces and flatten each into a 6 to 7 inch round.
Heat frying oil to about 350°F. Fry each piece of dough 1 to 2 minutes per side until puffed and golden. Drain on paper towels.
In a skillet cook ground beef and diced onion over medium heat until browned. Drain excess grease.
Add garlic and taco seasoning and cook about 1 minute. Stir in water or broth and simmer 5 to 7 minutes until thickened. Season with salt to taste.
To serve, place warm fry bread on a plate, spoon taco meat over the top, and finish with lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, sour cream, and any desired toppings.
