Classic Butterscotch Sauce

Rich, buttery, and perfectly sweet. This classic butterscotch sauce is perfect over ice cream, cakes, or stirred into coffee.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup brown sugar (light or dark)

  • ½ cup heavy cream

  • ½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick)

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • Optional: Pinch of sea salt for salted butterscotch

 

Directions

  1. Melt butter: In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.

  2. Add sugar: Stir in brown sugar and cook 2–3 minutes, stirring until glossy.

  3. Add cream: Slowly pour in cream while stirring—it will bubble.

  4. Simmer: Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer 4–5 minutes until slightly thickened.

  5. Finish: Remove from heat; stir in vanilla and salt.

  6. Cool: Let cool slightly before using. Store up to 2 weeks in the fridge; reheat gently to serve.
