Sardine Ceviche
Sardine ceviche is a bright, refreshing dish that transforms fresh or high-quality canned sardines into a zesty, coastal-inspired appetizer. The fish is marinated in citrus juice—typically lime or lemon—which lightly “cooks” it while enhancing its natural richness. Combined with crisp ingredients like red onion, tomatoes, cilantro, and a touch of chili for heat, the result is a vibrant balance of tangy, savory, and slightly spicy flavors. It’s quick to prepare, nutrient-dense, and perfect served chilled with crackers, tostadas, or avocado for a light yet satisfying bite.
Yield: 2 servings
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Ingredients
1-2 tins of sardines in olive oil or water
Juice of 2-3 limes (roughly 1/4 to 1/2 cup)
1/4 cup red onion, finely chopped
1 small tomato, diced
1/2 cucumber, diced (optional)
1 serrano or jalapeño pepper, minced (optional, for heat)
Handful of fresh cilantro, chopped
Salt and black pepper to taste
Directions
Prepare the Sardines
Open the tins and remove the sardines, placing them in a bowl. Some recipes recommend removing the backbone, though it is edible and nutritious.
Combine Ingredients
Add the chopped onion, tomato, cucumber, chili pepper, and cilantro to the bowl.
Add the Acidity
Pour the fresh lime juice over the mixture. Add a drizzle of the oil from the can if desired.
Mix & Marinate
Gently mix to combine, breaking the sardines slightly, but leaving some chunks.
Chill
Let it sit in the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the acid to "cook" the vegetables.
Serve
Season with salt and pepper. Serve cold with tortilla chips, tostadas, or crackers.
