Southern-Style Braised Red Cabbage

*Preparation Time:* 15 minutes *Cooking Time:* 1 hour *Servings:* 6

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium-sized red cabbage, cored and sliced

  • 2 tablespoons of butter

  • 1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced

  • 1/4 cup of brown sugar

  • 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar

  • Salt and black pepper to taste

  • 1/2 cup of apple juice (or water)

Instructions:

  1. In a large pot or Dutch oven, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and sauté until it becomes translucent, about 5-7 minutes.

  2. Add the sliced red cabbage to the pot and cook for another 5 minutes, stirring frequently.

  3. Sprinkle the brown sugar over the cabbage and onions, then pour the apple cider vinegar over the top. Stir to combine and ensure the cabbage is coated.

  4. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  5. Pour the apple juice (or water) into the pot, stir again, then cover and reduce the heat to low.

  6. Let the cabbage simmer for about an hour, stirring occasionally, until it is tender and the flavors have melded together.

  7. Adjust seasoning if necessary, then serve your Southern-Style Braised Red Cabbage hot as a side dish. Enjoy!

Please note: Always adjust cooking times and temperatures based on your stove and the size of your pot. And remember to taste as you cook to ensure the seasoning is to your liking.
