Tuna Melt with Mozzarella and Sharp Cheddar

A rich, cheesy tuna melt with creamy tuna salad, fresh mozzarella, and sharp white cheddar layered between buttery toasted bread. Crisp on the outside and melty inside, it is a simple comfort sandwich with big flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 can tuna packed in water, drained

  • 2 tbsp finely diced celery

  • 1 tbsp minced green onion

  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise, more to taste

  • ½ tsp yellow mustard

  • ⅓ cup fresh mozzarella cheese

  • Salt to taste

  • Black pepper to taste

  • 2 tbsp softened butter

  • 2 thick slices white bread

  • ¼ cup shredded sharp white cheddar cheese

  • 1 tsp chile crisp optional

  • Pinch cayenne pepper optional

 

Directions

  1. In a bowl combine tuna, celery, green onion, mayonnaise, mustard, and fresh mozzarella and mix until evenly combined. Season with salt and black pepper. Stir in chile crisp and cayenne if making the spicy version.

  2. Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread.

  3. Place one slice of bread butter side down in a skillet, spread the tuna mixture evenly on top, sprinkle with shredded cheddar, and place the second slice of bread on top butter side up.

  4. Cook over medium low heat about 3 to 4 minutes per side, pressing gently, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.

  5. Remove from the skillet, rest about 1 minute, then slice and serve hot.
